“The Wild Things” by Dave Eggers

wild thingsI spent the last Sunday morning of 2012 book surfing at Barnes & Noble, and I was looking for a book called A Visit From The Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, but it appeared it was not in stock.  However, as I was looking, I stumbled upon the Dave Eggers section and picked up The Wild Things and didn’t put it down until I was finished. It’s a story most of us have been familiar with since childhood as it is a visionary adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are. It follows Max’s lonely journey through being a boy. Eggers takes us back to being eight years old through Max the main character, who is having difficulty growing up in a world he realizes he cannot control. Max is into all sorts of nostalgic shenanigans and one night after a quarrel with his mother he accidentally journeys into the unknown.  The Wild Things finds a boy stumbling through the weird and dark trials of childhood.  Like Maurice Sendak’s classic dark and twisted children’s story, Max finds himself at odds with several beasts.  Upon crowning himself king of the wild things, Max did not comprehend how complex things could become. Overall this was an enjoyable read. Eggers does an excellent job transcending Sendak’s work into an adventurous novel about the love and hate that scars our youth, sending us screaming towards our future.
